Maybe A New Name Will Help

Published:

I had the privilege of attending both of the Española Valley High School boys basketball games at the Pit last week. They were both excellent games to say the least.

Despite winning or losing, we should be very proud of the Espanola Valley Sundevils boys basketball team. However, like last year, they came close, just not close enough, which reminded me of a similar situation. Ever heard of the Major League Baseball team called the Tampa Bay Rays, formerly known as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays? It wasn’t until after their named changed in 2007 did they gain real success and won their first division title in 2008. Google them for yourself. It’s pretty interesting stuff. Is this a coincidence or maybe ironic? Who’s to say?

On another note: come on people. Throwing your trash toward the basketball court? I am sure that reaction did not help what people already think and say about our Valley. And it couldn’t have possibly made the Española Valley High School players feel as if they made their fans proud.

Bottom line: congratulations team and coaches. There is a lot to be proud of.
