SUN Could Print Good News

Here is something a little different to think about. I am not writing to comment on any one article published in the Rio Grande SUN, but rather in general.

I have been reading the SUN for as long as I can remember. Still, as an adult, living two hours away from where this paper is published, I continue to indulge in the weekly stories. I love to keep up with what is going on in my home town.

However, there never seems to be any inspirational stories included. There are always stories about the crime rates, drug rates, failing school scores, teen pregnancy rates and stories such as those. What about the people who overcame these obstacles? I am not blind, I know that readers feed off the negativity in the stories. It is the same for all media.

But has anyone ever thought about throwing a success story or two into this paper? Maybe a drug addict or alcoholic who overcame their addiction and is now living a sober life, or a teen who became pregnant at an early age and managed to make something of themselves. Or how about an Española Valley High School graduate who is now pursuing a masters or doctorate degree?

I grew up in this town and I know it is beautiful but the one major local media source fails to give this town hope. It is not all about negativity. Remind your readers that they can achieve anything. All it takes is some support, hope, discipline and focus.

    Just a thought.
