Mayor Will Inform You

Published:

This is in response to your Oct. 21 editorial regarding the investigation into city police officer Eugene Rodella.

I am dismayed by the possibility that anyone who works in city government could be involved in criminal activity. Like any citizen, I want to see justice prevail.

In answer to concerns raised in your editorial, the City of Española Police Department should never be involved in any criminal investigation involving city Police Officers. This ensures there are no allegations of favoritism, conflicts of interest, or any other impropriety.

Also, it is policy that when allegations of egregious behavior by a city employee are made, administrative investigations are initiated. Upon the completion of those investigations, appropriate action is taken up to and including terminating the employee.

The Española Police Department responded quickly to the incident at the Dragon’s Lair, and immediately referred the matter to State Police when it became known that a city police officer was involved.

The Española Police Department also took immediate action by placing the officer on administrative leave and initiating an internal affairs investigation.

I will report to the citizens of Española when I have more information available.  In the meantime, please continue to let your readers know they may call me at (505) 929-0955 with any questions they may have.

    Mayor Joseph M. Maestas
