The Pojoaque Elks improved to 5-1 on the season with a 76-71 overtime victory over the Bernalillo Spartans Dec. 6 in Pojoaque.
The score was tied at 64-64 at the end of regulation, but Pojoaque outscored Bernalillo 12-7 in the four-minute overtime period. Tom Nakotte, Luke Salazar and Ryan Sullivan each scored 14 points to lead Pojoaque.
“They find a way to win and to me that’s the mark of a good team,” Pojoaque coach Joey Trujillo said. “They’re making the mistakes a team with youth makes, but they’re very fixable things and not anything to push the panic button about.”
Pojoaque is the defending Class AAA state champion, but lost four starters to graduation.
