New Mexico firefighters spread burning oil on the forest floor, May 22, in an effort to spread the fire started by a lightning strike in Hondito Canyon near Tres Piedras. The U.S. Forest Service is helping spread the fire because it happened in an area that was already slated for a prescribed burn. The total burn area is expected to be 14,900 acres.
