Support Surplus Purchases

Published:

Editor,

Thanks to the Rio Grande SUN for reprinting (in the Sept. 16 edition, page A5) an article regarding Guaranteed Surplus Purchase.

For those unfamiliar with this idea, it basically conceives of the county government purchasing, at fair Farmer’s Market prices, excess crops grown by local growers for distribution to those who can not afford it.

Because of the greater agricultural base of Rio Arriba County, this idea has an even greater value here than in Taos County.

For a relatively small cost implementation of a Guaranteed Surplus Purchase for local growers could be a win-win-win situation for local growers, those in need of better nutrition, and, most importantly, for preservation of agricultural land and water which, in their limited quantity are especially valuable here.

Thank you again for helping to bring this idea to public consideration.
