Two Pojoaque Girls Qualify for State Wrestling

Alaiyah Vigil and Izabela Lujan will wrestle at the state tournament on Feb. 17-18 after qualifying at the Feb. 3-4 regional championships.

Lujan competed a year ago as the only member of the Pojoaque team, and lost both of her matches.

Vigil lost both of her matches at the regional at 165 pounds, but made state as a wildcard. Lujan also lost two matches, but finished fifth place with the limited number of entries in girls heavyweight.

Alexis Archuleta won a first consolation match at 132 pounds, but ultimately lost and fell short of qualification. Eighth-grader Maria Talache lost two matches at 185 pounds and did not qualify.

McCurdy Takes Down District-Leading Trojans

In overtime, the Bobcats (10-12, 4-2 in district) scored 15 points to Mesa Vista’s nine, for a 51-45 home win against the Trojans (12-10, 5-1) on Feb. 4.

After going just 6-10 in non-district play, McCurdy has started a turnaround, now winning five of their last six games, and are just a game behind the district leaders, a tie between Mesa Vista and Escalante.

McCurdy next plays at home against Peñasco (5-14, 1-5) looking to continue their hot streak. Mesa Vista hosts Escalante (14-7, 5-1) on Thursday in a battle for first place.

Lady Sundevils Hold Middle of District Pack

Española Valley (10-12, 2-3) defeated Pojoaque (8-15, 1-4) on Feb. 4, 37-32 on the road, to remain steady in third place in District 2-4A.

Two days earlier, Española lost at Taos (7-14, 1-3) when their offense went silent for most of the second half in a 37-31 loss. The Lady Tigers went on a 14-1 run from late in the second quarter until late in the fourth. Española scored just one point in the third quarter and did not score in the final quarter until the closing minutes after they went down by 11.

The Sundevils next face off with Moriarty (12-10, 3-2) on Tuesday night, as they sit on the bubble of a state tournament appearance.

Luka Torrez scored 11 points and recorded nine rebounds and nine assists in a 64-20 win on Feb. 4 over Questa (2-20, 0-6). Two days earlier, he scored 23 points in a 54-45 win over McCurdy (10-12, 4-2).

The Lobos will look to take over first place in the district at Mesa Vista on Thursday.
