POLL: Pick the April 13 Athlete of the Week

Published:

Voting ends at 1 p.m. on Tuesday

Thomas Bolton, McCurdy Baseball

The Bobcats’ leadoff hitter had another impressive day at the plate and on the basepaths, raising his on-base percentage to .710 on the year. His 3-for-3 day with a walk and hit by pitch was highlighted by a fourth-inning inside-the-park home run. Bolton scored four runs on the day, and would have had five had he not left with an injury.

Mikayla Calabaza, Pojoaque Track and Field

Calabaza continued a strong start to the season as she looks to improve after missing the podium at last year’s state meet. At the Meadow City Invite at Robertson, the sophomore won first place in a crowded field in both the discus and the shot put events. She currently ranks fifth in 4A in the discus and third in the shot put.

Nathaniel Martinez, Escalante Track

Martinez is starting the year well after medaling three times at state last year. In Questa, he won first place in both the 110M and 300M hurdles, and finished second in the 100M dash and third in the long jump.

Joaquin Salazar, Española Tennis

Española’s No. 4 singles player had a strong weekend as the Sundevils took third place in the Albuquerque Academy tournament. His three-set comeback victory was the key difference in Española’s win over Robertson, and his doubles team along with Ian Gaytan won that match 6-0, 6-0. He continues a strong season in both singles and doubles; a week ago Gaytan and he finished in second place at the Capital Tournament.
