Roberto DeVargas is up to 200 career wins.
The Longtime McCurdy baseball coach Roberto DeVargas earned his 200th win as head coach, all with the Bobcats, with a sweep of Questa in a doubleheader on April 20. He achieved the accomplishment at the McCurdy field that bears his name.
βItβs a heck of an accomplishment,β DeVargas said. βTo do it with a group of kids like this, canβt ask for anything more.β
The school presented DeVargas with a plaque in a ceremony after the game. And he told players as they were leaving that he loved them.
Ron DeVargas, Robertoβs son and a catcher for the Bobcats from 2008 through 2012, said that local kids who grow up playing baseball look forward to playing under him.
Roberto DeVargas has coached McCurdy for 16 seasons, and made the postseason in 14 straight, not counting the canceled 2020 season. McCurdy has consistently been one of the top teams in the region. They were state runners-up in 2015 and 2016, losing both times to Melrose.
McCurdyβs success comes from consistency in the coaching staff and high expectations from DeVargas. McCurdy has often been especially strong on offense.
βHe treats us all like his own,β said senior Adrian Maestas. βIf heβs getting down on you, itβs a good thing. Youβve got to help him. Heβs doing it because he cares and because he actually wants to. He always treats us like his own, regardless.β
The Bobcats also clinched another district championship with their doubleheader wins over Questa (and with Mora splitting a doubleheader against PeΓ±asco on the same day), winning a district for the fourth-straight season.
βItβs really hard to put into words,β DeVargas said. βI love baseball. I really love baseball, man.β
The McCurdy coach said that this would be his final year.
