Thomas Bolton, McCurdy Baseball
Though McCurdy lost their state quarterfinal game to Rehoboth Christian, the junior leadoff hitter did everything possible to try to get the offense going. He led off the game with a walk, added a ground-rule double and scored in the third inning, and forced an error in the fifth, leading to another run after he was subbed out with an injury.
Mikayla Calabaza, Pojoaque Valley Track and Field
Pojoaque’s sophomore thrower took a fifth-place finish in the girls shot put, with a best throw of 32 feet, 11.5 inches. She needed a big mark on her third throw to reach the finals, and delivered. Calabaza also finished in 10th place in the girls discus at 92 feet, 11 inches.
Sonya Quintana, Pojoaque Valley Track and Field
The senior sprinter finally got a medal, after two seventh-place finishes, with a fourth-place finish in the girls 200 meters with a personal-best 25.75 seconds. Quintana placed seventh in the 100 meters at 13.47 in the final, and seventh in the javelin with a best throw of 105 feet, 7 inches.
