Monique Arrieta, Pojoaque Valley Girls Basketball
Pojoaque’s freshman ball-handler is fully back form an early-season injury, leading the Elkettes to two wins to start district season. She led the Elkettes with 11 points and consistently broke Española’s press in one big win. Then against Taos, she went to the free throw line with three seconds left, and put her team ahead.
Jayden Duran, Española Valley Boys Basketball
Duran’s clutch moments have led the Sundevils to a 2-0 start to district play. He hit two go-ahead free throws to down Pojoaque, then scored 12 of his 13 points in the second half to defeat Moriarty.
Natalie Romero, Pojoaque Valley Wrestling
A freshman wrestler for the Elkettes had a perfect weekend defending her home mat, going 10-0 and pinning all 10 opponents. That earned her the heavyweight wrestler of the tournament.
Cruz Sandoval, Española Valley Wrestling
Española’s senior got plenty of mat time in Pojoaque, and made the most of it. He pinned all six wrestlers he faced in less than seven minutes total, plus a forfeit win. That earned him first place in the Pojoaque Invite in the 139-pound class.
Andres Valdez, Mesa Vista Boys Basketball
Mesa Vista needed a big play to extend their winning streak, and Valdez delivered. The smallest player on the court grabbed an offensive rebound and hit two free throws in the closing seconds, part of his 10-point effort in a big win over Escalante.
