Serafin Mendez, Pojoaque Boys Basketball
The Elks’ sophomore forward has become a leader in his second varsity season, with Pojoaque currently above .500 on the season. In a big win over Aztec, Mendez scored 22 points on 11-of-16 shooting, and added 10 rebounds for a double-double.
Aliya Rael-Lopez, Española Valley Girls Basketball
The guard has become a leading scorer for the Sundevils, and she gave them a much-needed boost in a win over Miyamura. Her 14 points with four 3-pointers seemed to all come in big moments, powering the team to victory.
Salvador Saavedra, Mesa Vista Boys Basketball
The Trojans are mega-hot, on a nine-game win streak, including a win over defending state champion Pecos. In that game, the forward Saavedra had a big game with 13 points and big defense for Mesa Vista.
Cruz Sandoval, Española Valley Wrestling
Sandoval continues a strong wrestling season, and he took second place at the prestigious Joe Vivian Classic in Albuquerque. The senior made the final after winning his first three matches, and fell to the top seed from Volcano Vista just 1-0 in the final seconds.
