Trojans Maintain Leads in District
Both Mesa Vista basketball teams continued their win streaks through district play with strong performances.
The boys team (17-4, 6-0 in district) had two big wins, beating Mora (10-11, 3-3) 62-57, then cruising past McCurdy (12-10, 3-3) 75-59.
The McCurdy Bobcats kept the game close in the first half, but Mesa Vista pulled away in the second half, and had a huge lead when they subbed in their bench. Jordan Gallegos led Mesa Vista with 22 points in that game, and Marcos Martinez scored 20. Lucas Martinez scored 26 points to lead the Bobcats.
Mesa Vista would clinch a district regular season title this week if they win both of their games. The first of those comes on Thursday with their big challenge on the road at Escalante (14-7, 5-1). The Lobos will be hungry for a victory and for revenge from a 50-47 thriller played in January in Tierra Amarilla.
Meanwhile, the girls team (19-3, 6-0) cruised past Mora (6-13, 0-6) and McCurdy (6-12, 1-5) by a combined score of 122-46.
Camryn Johnson matched a career high with 11 points against Mora, while Tana Lopez scored 23 against McCurdy.
After a surprising loss by Tatum (21-2), the Lady Trojans now rank first in 2A in both the MaxPreps rankings and in the NMOT coaches poll.
Dulce Bounces Back
The Lady Hawks (12-9, 1-1) suffered a setback to start February with a 52-44 loss to Laguna-Acoma (13-7, 2-0).
But on Feb. 10, they came back for a big win, defeating Navajo Pine (2-20, 0-2) 69-18. The Hawks went up huge in the first quarter, and led 60-7 by halftime.
Dulce played just three games in a four-week span, but finish the year with four games in eight days. Their next is on Friday against Rehoboth Christian (9-10, 1-1).
