Sundevils overcome five turnovers in 42-7 thumping of Cuba

Despite turning the ball over five times, the Espanola Valley Sundevils dropped Cuba, 42-7, in a homecoming football game Friday night.

Big plays and fumbling fingers epitomized the Sundevil performance as Espanola Valley moved to 2-0 on the season, while the Class 2A Rams, who scored on a 75-yard interception return late in the contest, fell to 0-2.

Espanola Valley rushed for a whopping 389 yards and both attempted and completed its first pass of the season on a 20-yard Irvin Primero-to-Cody Coffeen connection to close out the scoring for the Sundevils.

Mikey Maestas and Victor Parra each had a pair of long touchdown runs for Espanola Valley, while Cru Wilder added 21-yard race to the pylon for a score.

In a schedule change dictated by availability of officials, the Sundevils host Santa Fe’s Capital High, Thursday, Sept. 5, a shift from Friday. Also, all of the ensuing District games, starting with Grants visiting Espanola on Sept. 13 will kick off at 6 p.m. instead of 7.

In other area football action, Pojoaque pounded host Hot Springs, 48-6, while Roswell’s Gateway Christian defeated Escalante, 54-0, in Tierra Amarilla. Dulce’s Saturday 8-man matchup at Questa has been postponed due a number of Questa players suffering from illness.
