Boxers duked it out on Sept. 28 during Española Fight Night 2024 at the Lucero Center. Weigh-ins began at 10 a.m. and the boxing action started at 1 p.m. There were 19 amateur boxing matches organized by Iron First Boxing.
Orlando Miera started the boxing program 17 years ago, along with his two sons, Patrick and Gabriel Miera, and his wife. The intent of the program was to teach the kids respect and self-discipline through boxing. Miera wanted to give youth an opportunity to do something positive and stay away from gangs and drugs. He also wanted them to learn that they didn’t need to use guns. Local boxer Mario Valerio fought on Saturday in the 203-lb. weight class. The gym was packed with spectators and approximately 250-300 people attended.
