Police Blotter: ‘Homeless Hippie’ Tries to Attack Man With Meat Cleaver

The police blotter is published to give readers an abridged look at criminal activity in their community and neighborhood. It is simply an illustration of what local law enforcement, funded by taxpayers, must deal with daily throughout the Española Valley.

 Española Police officers, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies or State Police responded to the following calls:

  

OD’d at work

May 22

3:46 a.m. A caller said his 18-year-old brother shot himself. The brother was not conscious or breathing and the Office of the Medical Investigator was called.

8:13 a.m. A Rodeway Inn caller reported her friend took her room key when she went to the store and the staff won’t open the door to let her retrieve her belongings.

8:25 a.m. A Merhege Farms caller wanted to report a stolen tractor.

9:09 a.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a seventh-grader who hasn’t been in school since March.

9:29 a.m. A Camino de las Animas caller said two men pointed a gun at his cousin and forced him into his vehicle, which they are trying to steal.

11:11 a.m. A Dairy Queen caller reported a man is throwing food and gravel at vehicles.

11:21 a.m. An Española Valley High School caller said a freshman girl has been sexually molested by a sophomore boy all year and wants to file a report.

11:29 a.m. An EZ-Way Laundry caller reported a woman is harassing her mother at work.

12:01 p.m. A caller said her ex was served with a temporary restraining order today and he’s called her about 15 times.

12:11 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a 13-year-old who’s disenrolled from school and hasn’t attended since April.

12:28 p.m. A La Mesilla caller saw a man walking on the side of the road who looks like a photo he saw on TV of the “most wanted” people.

12:40 p.m. A Speedway employee was passed out and turning blue. Narcan was administered and he regained consciousness.

12:53 p.m. A 911 call came in and a female could be heard in the background saying “Stop it, you’re hurting me.” The mother called the non-emergency line and said her daughters called 911 because they’re not getting their way.

2 p.m. A caller reported her daughter’s tires got slashed at Española Valley High School and they have video of the incident.

3:27 p.m. A caller said her sister keeps hitting her. She said their mother is allowing her sister to hit her. The mother said the children are hitting each other.

7:19 p.m. A shirtless drunk man was reportedly walking in the road near the old Rio Grande SUN building.

7:22 p.m. A Salas Auto Body caller heard a loud noise on camera and wasn’t sure if someone broke it. A back window was found to be busted out.

7:55 p.m. A Cordova caller said a young kid came out and tried to attack him with a meat cleaver. He said he’s meet deputies at the post office and would be on his tractor. He told deputies the “kid” looked like a homeless hippie.

8:07 p.m. A North Yucca Street caller reported the neighbors are yelling and fighting.

9:13 p.m. A Walgreens employee said a man outside was acting up and the manager asked her to call the police.

9:28 p.m. A man who doesn’t work there was cleaning the front windows at Speedway and was cursing and acting strange.

10:14 p.m. A man was throwing things in a house in Chamita, then got into a vehicle and hit a wall.

 

Abandoned at the hospital

May 23

12:58 a.m. An Abiquiú caller reported her son was drunk and knocking on her door.

7:26 a.m. A house in Vallecitos was burglarized.

9:50 a.m. An overdose was reported on South Riverside Drive when a woman took too much of her prescribed medication.

10:24 a.m. A Calle Jose Pablo caller said her friend’s ex-boyfriend was there last night and popped three tires on the new boyfriend’s vehicle.

12:38 p.m. A Lowe’s Home Improvement caller reported a vehicle is parked on the white lines and he can’t get his handicapped wife in his vehicle.

1:25 p.m. A man in a car pulled a handgun and pointed it at a person at Fairview Lane and North Riverside Drive.

2:32 p.m. A man said he paid a woman $800 for a house deposit and $1,000 for rent and she canceled the lease five days before he was supposed to move in. He said he never met the woman and all business was conducted over Facebook Marketplace. The woman blocked all communications with him.

2:57 p.m. A woman took her 15-year-old daughter to the hospital for a mental evaluation and abandoned her there.

3:15 p.m. An East Pueblo Street caller said a woman is interfering in her home appraisal.

3:17 p.m. An overdose was reported near the Rutheron water tank. 

4:06 p.m. A South McCurdy Road caller reported his package with prescription medication was supposed to be delivered on the 19th and he got an emailed photo of it being delivered, but he didn’t receive it.

5:45 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on children because the father is falling over when he signs them in to school and one of the children said he the parents do drugs in their bedroom.

5:46 p.m. A caller said her neighbor was fighting with her boyfriend and she thinks it got physical. The boyfriend has a handgun on him and he had two children with him.

6:06 p.m. A caller reported her daughter was arguing with a man and he threw a shirt at her. She smacked him with the shirt and he got verbally abusive and punched the wall.

6:32 p.m. A caller heard about text messages regarding a woman who said her son would take guns to Española Valley High School.

7:06 p.m. An Allsups caller said a car with two men in it has been there for a while and one man was harassing customers.

8:44 p.m. A man said he was harassed by an Allsups employee and hit in the face. It was determined the harasser was an ex-employee that was antagonizing employees.

8:46 p.m. A Chimayó caller reported he’s having issues with his brother-in-law and the man yelled at him and threw rocks at his dog.

8:53 p.m. A caller said a woman was possibly run over due to a domestic violence situation.

9:46 p.m. A male was detained at Española Valley High School in regard to an assault. He was released to his family.

9:47 p.m. A man in an SUV was threatening to shoot a man at the 420 Emporia.

10:19 p.m. A Velarde caller went home and found his gate damaged.

10:43 p.m. A woman ran into the San Pedro Shell, saying she has a restraining order on a man in a car, who has a gun.

 

Gun-toting man

May 24

1:50 a.m. A BOLO was issued for a car involved in a shooting near the Ojo Caliente Fire Department.

8:43 a.m. A Barbee Street caller said the Water Department turned on her water and her yard is flooded.

10:39 a.m. A caller reported a woman in a car is driving with her eyes closed and is swerving near Walmart. The caller thinks the driver is under the influence of something.

12:43 p.m. A Ranchitos Park caller said a man in a truck pulled out a rifle and pointed it at a vehicle. The person in the vehicle got out and the two started fist-fighting.

1:01 p.m. A Tierra Amarilla caller reported a man with a warrant is driving around being stupid and threatened him.

1:09 p.m. A man was panhandling at Center Market and refusing to leave. When asked to leave, he began cussing and yelling at an employee.

3:18 p.m. A caller said children riding on a go-kart on County Road 20 nearly got hit.

3:46 p.m. A caller reported his neighbor was drinking Fireball and then left in an SUV, flipping him off. He said she’s definitely drunk and has a teen in the vehicle.

4:01 p.m. A caller said he was driving by the Bond House and the man’s friend flagged him down and said he needed an ambulance.

5:44 p.m. A caller wanted officers to do courtesy rounds because the homeless behind the barbershop on La Joya Street were being loud.

5:49 p.m. A caller said a man with a gun walked into the Ohkay Casino and went to the restroom.

5:58 p.m. A caller reported a man in a car in the Dollar Tree in Española parking lot flashed a gun at them when they told him to move out of the road. The caller said the man was doing a drug deal.

8:27 p.m. A caller said she was hit by her son’s father.

10:03 p.m. A Lowe’s Home Improvement employee reported two people are setting the alarm off around the lumber and she’s trying to lock up.

11:49 p.m. A Lyden caller said people on loud ATVs are yelling and screaming as they go up and down the road.

11:57 p.m. A La Joya Street caller reported her husband attacked her and threw her on the ground before leaving in a vehicle.

 Threatened by thugs

May 25

5:52 a.m. A woman on Fairview Lane was foaming at the mouth and breathing hard. It was determined that she was going through alcohol withdrawals.

6:05 a.m. An overdose was reported in Alcalde.

7:32 a.m. A man told a deputy after a traffic stop near the Ohkay Casino, that he had dope in the car and allowed him to search it. 

1:58 p.m. A Calle Lopez caller wanted the fire department to cut a chain off her dog that was stuck on it.

5:10 p.m. An Ohkay Casino caller found a purse filled with drugs and drugs paraphernalia. They also had the purse owner detained in the security office.

5:56 p.m. A Calle del Sol caller wanted a girl removed. The caller said the girl is her grandson’s girlfriend who sneaks into the window and threatens her.

6:05 p.m. A caller reported her friend texted her and said someone has a gun and is threatening her at her house. She said the woman’s daughter brings these “thugs” around and they threaten her friend.

7:09 p.m. A deputy took a report for assault in Coyote.

7:31 p.m. A Hernandez caller reported her father died.

7:48 p.m. A caller said two men on the side of the road in Ohkay Owingeh appear to be fighting.

8:45 p.m. A Medanales caller requested courtesy rounds because her husband, whom she is divorcing, is going into her yard and through her trash.

9:19 p.m. An overdose was reported in Hernandez. Narcan was administered.

9:31 p.m. A handgun was found in the mens restroom at the Ohkay Casino.

11:04 p.m. A Calle del Sol caller said her grandson came in through the back window and broke it.

11:59 p.m. An East Jiron Street caller reported the neighbor was fighting yesterday and went to his house and broke the door, threatened him and punched him.

 Biting and scratching

May 26

12:12 a.m. A La Joya Street and South McCurdy Road caller said he owns a shed on someone else’s land and it was broken into yesterday.

1:50 a.m. A Las Lomas Apartments caller reported a woman is biting and scratching a man.

8:46 a.m. A caller wanted to speak with an officer about two men involved in an altercation at the Santa Claran Casino Hotel.

10:44 a.m. A caller reported a car has been parked on the side of the road in Hernandez and there are two people inside. A deputy discovered one of the people inside the car was overdosing and Narcan was administered.

11:59 a.m. A caller said she left her car near the Dollar General in Hernandez because it died and now it’s missing.

12:05 p.m. A fire was reported in Hernandez.

12:12 p.m. An overdose was reported at the Rio Chama Chevron.

2:47 p.m. A Starbucks caller said two people were arguing and one of them brandished a gun.

3:10 p.m. A Domino’s Pizza caller reported a customer is berating and yelling at an employee.

3:23 p.m. A woman was escorted out of Walmart because she’s trespassed and she became disorderly.

4:10 p.m. A caller reported a person fell off a cliff on Thunder Ridge Road.

4:40 p.m. Two youths on a jet ski were stuck about half a mile from shore at Abiquiú Lake.

5:46 p.m. A Calle del Sol caller reported her grandson got into her house, threatened her and then hit her with food.

9:53 p.m. A Medanales caller said her son-in-law is causing a commotion and throwing things around the house.

10:18 p.m. A Fairview Lane caller reported people in a truck that’s in the middle of the road, might be fighting.

11:02 p.m. A Medanales caller said their grandson is threatening to beat them up.

11:22 p.m. A Santo Niño Lane caller reported a man went to his house and was shot and bleeding.

Drunk grandma

May 27

12:06 a.m. A West Bond Street caller wanted to speak with an officer because he thinks his neighbor stole his bicycle.

1:03 a.m. A motion alarm was activated at Lowe’s Home Improvement. Someone took a case of Red Bull and two drill sets.

5:57 a.m. A Roosevelt Street caller said a homeless man is behind his property and has a campfire going.

8:03 a.m. A Rio Chama Chevron caller reported a customer is spraying his dog, harassing him and being aggressive.

8:49 a.m. An overdose was reported on County Road 5. The caller said the person was “grungy” and had a needle in his arm.

9:46 a.m. A Dairy Queen caller requested courtesy rounds because one of her employees threatened to jump another employee.

10:08 a.m. A Coyote caller said a man is harassing them.

10:12 a.m. A caller reported seeing someone cutting power lines several days ago on Calle Duran and North McCurdy Road.

11:04 a.m. An overdose was reported in Alcalde.

2:28 p.m. A caller wanted to report a package was stolen in Chamita. 

2:34 p.m. A Medanales caller said his father is drunk and trying to fight him and his brother.

2:52 p.m. A Center Market caller saw many people doing transactions with someone parked in the back row of the parking lot.

3:13 p.m. A caller from Dr. John Fox’s office requested that a needle be picked up from the sidewalk.

5 p.m. A Little Warriors Daycare caller said a drunk grandparent is trying to pick up a child.

6 p.m. A Center Market caller reported receiving what they think is a fake $100 bill.

9:09 p.m. A woman went to RASO to report her car stolen.

 

Acting crazy

May 28

9:22 a.m. A caller said he lost his gun in 2023. He moved out of state and is back and now wants to report it missing.

9:28 a.m. A Medanales caller reported his wife is irate and acting crazy. He wants an officer to calm her down because she scratched and punched him.

9:50 a.m. An overdose was reported at Dairy Queen. One dose of Narcan was administered.

12:02 p.m. An El Guique caller wanted to speak with a deputy because the neighbor is out of control.

1:30 p.m. A La Joya Street caller said a phone was plugged in outside her office. She took it inside and wants an officer to pick it up because she thinks it might be stolen.

2:32 p.m. A Classic Auto Sales caller reported a naked man was in the back of one of the trucks that doesn’t work.

3:04 p.m. A Pizza 9 caller said a man was hitting a woman and pulling her hair as they walked on the sidewalk.

3:28 p.m. An Española Pathways Shelter caller reported four people on the side of the building were doing drugs and being disrespectful to employees.

3:36 p.m. A caller said someone in a truck was shooting pellet guns on El Llano Road and North Riverside Drive.

3:50 p.m. A caller reported someone is using his information to pay bills and employees at city hall won’t tell him who’s doing it.

4:14 p.m. A Crown Lane caller said he called 911 to scare his girlfriend so she calms down, but he doesn’t need the police. The caller phoned again and said he was calling as a prank because “people do it all the time.”

5:58 p.m. A Hernandez caller reported a man on a tractor tried to knock down a wall on their property.

11:48 p.m. A Hernandez caller said he is getting a divorce but keeps getting texts and calls from his wife and mother-in-law.
