In the Wrestling World, Maestas is One to Watch

Española Valley’s Jazlyn Maestas continues to position herself as one to watch when the wrestling state meet hits the mat later in the month.

Maestas cruised through her matches Friday to win individual gold in the 102-lb. weight class in the Northern Nightmare at Piedra Vista, beating Kirtland Central’s Hayden Robinson on a technical fall.

Jaiden Yazzie put in 21 points with seven steals and Eric Tsosie chipped in 13 points, while Adolf Vigil had 15 rebounds for the host Hawks (10-8, 1-1 in District 1-2A) against the Wolves.

The visiting Lobos (14-5, 2-1 in District 2-5A) ran off a 13-4 third quarter run to expand their lead from 22-18 to 35-22, then they pulled away from there against the Panthers.

Miguel Orozco and Irvin Primero each scored 14 points, with Aaron Quintana adding 12 and Jerek Duda 11 for the Sundevils (6-15, 2-1 in District 2-4A). Duda hit a pair of 3-pointers and Orozco and Quintana each had five points as Española jumped out to a 16-9 first quarter lead, helping them win consecutive games for the first time this season.

The visiting Elks (8-12) took a break from District 2-4A play, but it was no break on the court as they came out slow in the first and third quarters, getting outscored 40-17 over those two stretches against the Huskies.

Jaiden Yazzie went off for 28 points and Jamien Vicente Jr. added 10, while Adolf Vigil grabbed nine rebounds with three steals to spark the visiting Hawks (11-8, 2-1 in District 1-2A) to a comeback victory over the Lynx.

This time around, the visiting Elks (9-12, 2-1 in District 2-4A) took advantage of the first and third quarters, outscoring the Pintos 31-16 in those periods.

The offense wasn’t exactly clicking for the visiting Lobos (15-5, 3-1 District 5-2A), but a standout defensive effort in the fourth quarter was the difference after the teams ended the final quarter tied at 33-all.

The host Trojans (17-3, 4-0 in District 5-2A) built up a 38-13 lead, then coasted to the victory over the Panthers.
