Anniversary Chance to See Old Friends

I attended the 40th anniversary Sept. 12 of La Clinica del Pueblo in Tierra Amarilla and Los Ojos. La Clinica is one of the great stories of Northern New Mexico. I wish you had given the anniversary more coverage in your Sept. 17 issue.

The clinic, and the people who created it, inspired me when I arrived in New Mexico 40 years ago. Valentina Martinez, Beronice and Pedro Archuleta, Maria Varela and many others who worked so hard to bring health care to T.A. and the surrounding communities are true heroes.

I got to meet old friends Sept. 12, like Betita Martinez, who once ran the newspaper El Grito del Norte in Española. We all remembered La Clinica supporters like nurses, and administrators who have labored so much over the years to save lives and deliver babies up north.

Today our country is talking about making health care a right and a privilege for everyone. The Tierra Amarilla Clinica did that years ago.

I loved being at the Sept. 12 anniversary fiesta because, despite these difficult times, that celebration was so full of hope.
