I was delighted when I read your front-page story on Jan. 7 about how Española will be installing new LED streetlights. I look forward to the time when Española has better illumination, as now so many streetlights are burned out, and the others glare straight into the eyes of passing drivers.
I hope the City of Española is aware that there are good and not-so-good LED lights. Some do a great job of illuminating streets, sidewalks and parks while being environmentally friendly. They are properly focused, so they do not glare into the windows of neighboring houses. They emit light at wavelengths that cause less light pollution, thereby not outshining the stars.
Española is in the most beautiful valley in New Mexico. It would be great if by installing state-of-the-art lights, the City of Española could make its streets safer, and preserve from light pollution some of the grandest night skies in the world.
