(SUNfoto by Joe Crawford) A state Highway Department snow plow crosses Highway 84/285 at the intersection at La Puebla Road about 9 a.m. this morning (Dec. 23) as Department Supervisor Lino Herrera crosses the road and Española Police Deputy Chief Raye Byford directs traffic. Police blocked off the southbound lanes of the highway for about an hour this morning until about 9:15 a.m. because of bad road conditions. Byford said between 60 and 80 vehicles were backed up in a traffic jam on the highway before it was closed. Several others had driven off the side of the road, Byford said. An 8:41 a.m. forecast from the National Weather Service estimated there would be about an additional inch of snow in the Española Valley today and between one and three inches accumulation at elevations of 7,500 feet or higher, which would include Chama.
