Dog Pack Targets Children’s Backpacks

    Española Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police and State Police responded to the following calls:

Drunk and Angry

Monday, Jan. 4

    • 12:07 a.m. — A Chamita woman said her son was drunk and angry and breaking car windows.

    • 1:40 p.m. — A German shepherd that had been shot was lying about three quarters of a mile from Rio Arriba County Magistrate Court, a caller said.

    • 3:13 p.m. — A man knocked over the cash register at the Ohkay Owingeh Eagle Mart and drove off in a Honda, according to staff. The suspect and the cashier gave police conflicting reports. Police took a report.

    • 5:49 p.m. — Two men in a grayish, older-model Crown Victoria with a broken back window were driving erratically down State Road 76 and possibly doing drugs, a caller reported.

    • 8:29 p.m. — A man picked a fight with security guards at Center Market, staff reported. He was treated for burns he had received a month ago.

    • 8:42 p.m. — A woman reported her son was drunk and had started a fire.

    • 9:08 p.m — A Rio Rancho man kept calling a Velarde woman and threatening to blow up her house, she said.

Nice and Warm

Tuesday, Jan. 5

    • 2:17 a.m. — A Fairview trailer court man reported several subjects, including his ex-girlfriend’s sister, kept knocking at his door, whistling and flashing laser lights at him, then running back into the bosque.

    • 11:00 a.m. — A Cook’s Mobile Home Park resident said someone stole $760 from her house, and her son knows who did it. A report was taken.

    • 1:34 p.m. — Police checked on a man sleeping in a silver Buick on the shoulder off Industrial Park Road. The man admitted he had dozed off because the sun felt nice and warm to him.

    • 2:01 p.m. — A man throwing bottles at a traffic light near the Ohkay Travel Center was picked up on a probation violation.

    • 5:14 p.m. — A caller had overheard “a bunch of ladies” at Wal-Mart talking about how tension is rising between two local gangs. The women had overheard a man discussing plans to shoot up a house by Center Market because of a feud between the West Side gang and their rivals.

‘Not All There’

Wednesday, Jan. 6

    • 5:20 a.m. — A Calle don Eduardo caller said someone had been stealing wood from his house all night. Police took a report for a stolen half-cord of wood.

    • 8:41 a.m. — An Ojo Sarco couple was high on drugs and fighting over money, a neighbor said.

    • 12:43 p.m. — A woman who is “not all there” was trying to fight everyone for the keys to her mailbox, a caller reported on Gordon Lane.

    • 4:30 p.m. — About eight people in a white Cherokee were blocking the road, drinking, yelling and just making a scene, according to a man in Truchas.

    • 4:45 p.m — A Fairview Lane man who asked animal control to come pick up a puppy had a last-minute change of heart and decided to keep it.

    • 6:18 p.m. — Rio Chama Chevron staff said a man walked in and ran off with the donation jar.

    • 9:57 p.m. — A man, who was evidently drunk and whispering very quietly, said “they” were hiding behind the trash cans by his house. Police couldn’t find them.

Stabbing Never Happened

Thursday, Jan. 7

    • 8:06 a.m. — A group of people found asleep by security guards in the Wal-Mart parking lot told police they’d had a fight with their relatives and spent the night in their car.

    • 9:33 a.m. — A landlord said his tenants moved out while he was out of town and left the house trashed.

    • 12:39 p.m. — An Española Valley Nursing Home employee reported one of his residents was buying drugs.

    • 2:39 p.m. — Española Valley High School staff said a group of students were caught putting pins on peoples’ chairs. The students’ parents were called.

    • 3:45 p.m. — An Ohkay Owingeh woman reported her mother-in-law had come in her house and announced she just stabbed her husband. Police made contact with the man and found him uninjured. Police reported the mother-in-law was drunk and unwilling to talk.

    • 4:37 p.m. — A woman caring for her disabled uncle said her ex-boyfriend has been sending her harassing texts.

Meat Vendors Talk Trash

Friday, Jan. 8

    • 12:12 a.m. — Two drunk men were asking people for money at the Allsup’s gas pumps, a customer reported.

    • 1:08 a.m. — A man who asked for paramedics after his brother punched him in the face became uncooperative and started using vulgar language when deputies tried to interview him. A report was taken.

    • 8:02 a.m. — Two students came out of Española Middle School and bought something from a woman parked outside in a black Nissan Altima, a caller reported.

    • 12:00 p.m. — Kentucky Fried Chicken employees reported a drug transaction taking place in the parking lot.

    • 12:12 p.m. — A pack of stray dogs roaming the Santo Nino Mobile Home Park tries to steal children’s backpacks on their way to school every morning, according to a neighbor.

    • 4:40 p.m. — A man was trying to steal Axe men’s grooming products from Wal-Mart, security staff reported.

    • 8:56 p.m. — Walgreens staff said someone was standing by their video-rental machine talking rudely to customers and selling meat.

Beer Run

Saturday, Jan. 9

    • 12:39 a.m. — A suspicious bicycle was reported behind the First Baptist Church.

    • 10:39 a.m. — A woman said another woman punched her in the face the night before at a Pojoaque basketball game.

    • 11:02 a.m. — A man said someone stole his wallet from the dashboard of his truck while he ran into the Kentucky Fried Chicken. One officer noted, “When you leave your window open and your wallet right there, that’s what’s going to happen.” Police took a report.

    • 4:42 p.m. — A man was driving through Valley Estates throwing rocks from his car, a caller reported.

    • 7:51 p.m. — A man on a beer run stole two 40-ounce containers and a six-pack, Philips 66 gas station employees reported. The same man had threatened staff with a syringe earlier that night when they refused to let him use the bathroom, they said.

    • 10:41 p.m. — A man stole a woman’s purse and cell phone while she was at Margarita’s bar in Chama, she said.

Underage Drinkers Berate Cashier

Sunday, Jan. 10

    • 12:40 p.m. — Four men were reportedly drinking beer at the Española School District Central Administration building parking lot while their children played basketball inside.

    • 3:21 p.m. — An elderly man was wandering around an abandoned house on Hindi Lane, according to a neighbor.

    • 4:19 p.m. — A woman out partying had broken a man’s windshield while he was drinking at Club Tropicana the previous night, he reported.

    • 4:40 p.m. — A “group of kids” became angry and was hassling the P&L Grocery manager for not selling them liquor.
