Fishing Report for the Week of April 23

ABIQUIÚ LAKE: The fishing for walleye was good using crank baits, tubes, jerk baits, spoons, grubs and minnows. A few brown trout were taken by anglers using crank baits and minnows. The fishing for smallmouth bass was fair using tubes, craws and jerk baits.

CHAMA RIVER: The water flows Monday morning below El Vado and Abiquiú dams were 547 cubic feet per second and 776 cubic feet per second, respectively. The fishing was slow in both areas.

EAGLE NEST LAKE: The trout fishing was fair-to-good using power bait, salmon eggs, spinners and Pistol Petes.

FENTON LAKE: The fishing for trout was good using spinners, black and olive wooly buggers, Pistol Petes, power bait and salmon eggs.

HERON LAKE: The fishing from the bank for trout was fair using salmon eggs, power bait and spinners. The fishing from boats for lake trout was fair using jigs and trolling assorted crank baits at 20-to-30 feet (see Catches of the Week).

JEMEZ WATERS: The water flow on the Jemez River Monday morning near Jemez Springs was 134 cubic feet per second. The runoff from recent snow storms muddied the streams and slowed the fishing over the weekend. Prior to the storms, trout fishing on the Rio Guadalupe, San Antonio, East Fork and Cebolla rivers was good.

RIO GRANDE: The water flow Monday morning at the Taos Junction Bridge was 719 cubic feet per second. The trout fishing was fair using wooly buggers, small jerk baits and spinners.

SAN JUAN RIVER: The water flow below Navajo Lake Monday morning was 510 cubic feet per second. The trout fishing through the Texas Hole and Upper Flats areas was fair-to-good using small hair jigs, chamois leeches, San Juan worm, parachute adams and red annelids. The fishing through the bait waters was fair using night crawlers, cheese, salmon eggs, hair jigs and jerk baits.

SANTA CRUZ LAKE: The trout fishing was good using power bait, worms, spoons and spinners.

CATCHES OF THE WEEK:

Heron Lake: Martin Trujillo of Albuquerque caught a 13.5 pound lake trout April 17 trolling a rainbow Bomber. David McCulloch of Rio Rancho caught a 10.2 pound lake trout April 18 on a white jig. Tom Hepplewhite of Albuquerque caught a 10-pound laker April 19 trolling a Rapala. Carley Perry of Los Lunas caught a 10.4 pound laker April 20 on a red-and-white Flatfish.

Chama River: Mark Lein of Georgia caught a 20-inch brown trout below El Vado dam April 16 using an artificial minnow.
