Española Firefighter Theresa Martinez douses a fire Oct. 24, allegedly set by a group of young people, at Valdez Park. Orlando Miera, who teaches boxing at the nearby Lucero Center, said four minors set fire to a pile of woodchips, and fled east. He sent his son Patrick Miera to alert Española Recreation Program Supervisor Maria Sandoval about the blaze. With the fire quickly extinguished, city contractors used the woodchips to cover the ground beneath playground equipment at the park.
