Could somebody please explain to me why a gag order needs to be placed on our high school mariachi band? What are the band director, high school principal and superintendent afraid of? That these musicians will share their excitement about being in President Obama’s inauguration parade with us.
We won’t know what is upsetting the band director about the Rio Grande SUN since he won’t comment, but he needs to see the bigger picture here. This is a once in a lifetime experience for these students, and something for all of us to be proud of. How many times has the Rio Grande SUN been criticized for reporting the negative? Here we have a GREAT positive story and the band members deserve to have their bragging rights. Hopefully the “powers that be” will come to their senses and “allow” the mariachis — with or without an adult present — to share their experiences when they return with our local paper, and thereby with all of us.
