Obama Was Mostly Right
I think President Obama was largely correct when he analogized politics to the sport of football. The City of Española, like a good football team, actually has a great diverse skill set on its governing body, but just like any good football team, much of it boils down to the quarterback.
I think the last city council meeting really emphasized that our quarterbacks Mayor Vigil and City Manager Reichelt don’t communicate well with the team, they would rather try to do a running play than utilize us to move the chains and at that last meeting they just kept getting sacked. The council had to vote down a lot of potential ideas because they weren’t well thought out or discussed with anyone before hand, and I had to table an ordinance I helped draft because it mutated into something completely different than what I wanted to do.
Communication is key to any complex sport or organization, sometimes it’s going to take longer to get down the field than you’d like. However, doing the hard work and making sure everything is set up right can lead to some touchdowns like we saw with the animal ordinance. That ordinance had a lot of phone calls, communication, and dialogue, it took longer than anyone would’ve liked but it passed almost unanimously because of the buy in secured through that communication.
With the fourth quarter ticking down I still think we can still do some scoring, it will just take passing the ball.
