We are outraged and feel we must respond.
We write regarding the front page article of the Rio Grande Sun, questioning the mayor’s paternal responsibilities (Rio Grande SUN, July 8, 2009 page A1 “Is Mayor a Deadbeat Dad?”) The answer is no.
This newspaper executed one of many attempts to slander and defame (sic) the person who holds the highest elected office in the city of Española. Throughout the years, we have seen (Mayor) Joseph’s (Maestas) relationship with his son. Joseph has always been there for him despite their long distance relationship, traveling hundreds of miles to be there for major events in his son’s life such as his first football game and does his very best not to miss out on any other milestones in his son’s life. Furthermore, he has always financially provided for his son.
Regarding Joseph’s wife, Martha, and the mention of her salary, this has no bearing on the issues regarding his former wife and their issues of child support. Martha Vasquez is a kind and genuine person and has always supported Joseph’s relationship with his son.
As mayor, Joseph has always tried to promote Española in the most positive and progressive ways. Joseph has made the weekly city council meetings readily accessible to the citizens by putting them on the airwaves and making city government accountable and more transparent. This is one of many examples of his progressive leadership.
This Valley needs the SUN to move from sensational tabloid-like journalism and focus on the local and global issues.
