Students from McCurdy Charter School participated in the New Mexico Regional Science Fair Feb. 28 in Las Vegas, New Mexico, after first competing in the school’s local science fair in late January. Winners from each division were selected to represent McCurdy at the regional competition.
McCurdy Charter School was represented by 11 middle school students and three high school students, many presenting their research projects at the regional level for the first time. Several students earned top placements and will now advance to the New Mexico State Science Fair, which will be April 10–16 in Socorro.

First place: Serenity Duran, William Wheat and Natalie Martinez

Sustainable Materials and Design – Junior Division
Third place: Jesse James Aguilar
Engineering and Technology – Junior Division
Honorable mention: Gerald Campion
Engineering and Technology – Senior Division
Third place: Markanthony Valdez and Julian Nino-Vigil
Physics and Astronomy
Honorable mention: Marcos Hurtado
Students who placed at the regional level will move on to compete at the New Mexico State Science Fair, representing McCurdy Charter School among top student researchers from across the state.
The middle school team was coached by Mr. Bryan Openia, and the high school team was coached by Ms. Melissa Berryhill.
