Mesa Vista XC Runners Compete in Santa Rosa

The Mesa Vista High School boys cross country team competed over the weekend at The City of Natural Lakes Invitational at The Blue Hole in Santa Rosa.

“It was a great response to our 5th place finish last week,” coach Ben Sandoval said. “We wanted to be in the top three last week but were a little disappointed when we saw the results.”

There were 18 total teams at the meet in Santa Rosa and the MV boys finished first.

Those in attendance were: Legacy Academy, Cimarron, East Mountain, Estancia, Logan, Maxwell, NACA, Portales, Raton, Robertson, Roy, San Jon, Santa Rosa, Tucumcari, Valencia, Mesa Vista and Des Moines. The next-closest team (second place) to Mesa Vista was NACA with 100 points. Ezequiel Nevarez won another individual title (making it his fourth individual title of the season).

Mesa Vista had four runners in the top 10 and they did it without their fourth and sixth runners Kenny Gallegos and Jason Gallegos.

Another highlight of the day was the youngest member of the Mesa Vista team, sixth-grader Ariana Epling, who finished fifth overall in the middle school girls race.

This is her first year in cross country.

The district 5-1A/2A Championship races will be at Mesa Vista High School in Ojo Caliente starting at 9 a.m. Nov. 2.
