Tom McDonald’s self-righteous column about “older white men” in the April 15 issue of the Rio Grande SUN is as fine an example of pseudo-intellectual stereotyping and discrimination as anything I’ve seen on social media.
If he’d substituted the words “black” for “white” or “women” for “men” in his strange little rant, he would most certainly have been accused by “liberal older white men” (like himself?) of racism, sexism, and age discrimination.
It may be too late for Mr. McDonald, but it’s hopefully not too late for others of us to be more thoughtful and avoid jumping to oversimplified conclusions and stereotypes on the basis of ANYONE’S age, race, or gender, even if those assumptions are disguised as attacks on discrimination and stereotyping.
Many of the kindest, gentlest, and most tolerant people I know happen to be “older white men.”
