High school basketball got going big time, with many teams diving into the season in tournaments. Mesa Vista made some big waves with an impressive showing in the Cameron Martinez Memorial Invitational at Española Valley High School.

A rough first quarter doomed the visiting Bobcats (1-1) as they fell behind 23-6 and could not rally to get back in the game against the Timberwolves.

It was a tight game through halftime in the opening round of the Martinez Invitational, with the host Sundevils (1-4) trailing just 31-29 at the break. But the Bobcats held a 32-14 advantage in the second half as Josiah Wilson finished with 21 points and Luca Kalishman had 15.

The host Leopards (1-3) trailed just 26-23 at halftime, but the Phoenix were able to hang on Mikey Mora and Jaxen Peinado each scored 17.

After trailing 26-23 at halftime, the Trojans (2-0) came roaring back in the second half as Andres Valdez scored 12 of 16 points after the break in the second round of the Martinez Invitational. Santiago Martinez scored 19 points for Mesa Verde, including four 3-pointers. Aaron Quintana had 13 points for the Sundevils (1-5) and Isaiah Chavez added 12 on four first-half 3-pointers.

Highland 66, Pojoaque Valley 53

A rugged third quarter in which they were outscored 19-6 thwarted the Elks’ (0-4) efforts to overcome a 30-25 halftime deficit to the Hornets in the second round of the Martinez Invitational.

Dulce 73 Shiprock 69

A 12-point run at the start of the third quarter sparked a big comeback for the Hawks (3-0), and a 3-pointer from Jamien Vicenti Jr. marked their first lead of the second half after trailing 36-28 at halftime 60-47 late in the third quarter of the Chieftain Tournament.

Mesa Vista 68, Bosque 60

Despite missing big man Jordan Gallegos, the Trojans (4-0) unofficially claimed the Martinez Invitational championship by sweeping their three games, with Santiago Martinez putting up 25 and Andres Valdez added 23 against the Bobcats.

Hobbs 75, Española Valley 42

The host Sundevils (1-6) fell behind 23-9 in the first quarter, then trailed 44-18 at halftime in the finale of the Martinez Invitational.

Pecos 62, McCurdy 28

The host Bobcats (1-2) fell behind 22-5 in the first quarter and despite a bit of a rally before halftime, the Panthers used a big third quarter to put the game away.

The Hawks (3-1) led 40-38 mid-way through the fourth quarter Daymian Hammond’s bucket, but the Bears rallied down the stretch to take the championship of the Chieftain Tournament.
