Pojoaque Football Coach Resigns

Pojoaque Valley High School football coach Jorge Oropeza resigned from his position last week, according to Pojoaque superintendent Mel Morgan.

Oropeza spent two seasons as the head coach for the Elks, going 5-15, including a 1-9 record in 2017.

“I don’t really want to (go into detail),” Oropeza said in a phone call Thursday (7/26). “I left on good terms and there was nothing against the school or the district. It was more of a license thing.”

Morgan said the head coach application was posted on Monday and will close on July 30.

Assistant coach Patrick Mares will be the interim coach until an official hire is made. Pojoaque’s first game of the season is on Aug. 24 at Capital High School.
