Early Morning Gunshots and War Calls

The police blotter is published to give readers an abridged look at criminal activity in their community and neighborhood. It is simply an illustration of what local law enforcement, funded by taxpayers, must deal with daily throughout the Española Valley.
Española Police officers, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies or State Police responded to the following calls:
Bad Example
Feb. 12
12:03 a.m. A vehicle was shot at and damaged near DeVargas Funeral Home.
12:17 a.m. A Jemez View Street caller could hear grinding coming from nearby. He requested courtesy rounds.
12:30 a.m. An Avenida Cañada caller heard five or six gunshots in the area.
5:52 a.m. A North Paseo de Oñate caller reported her vehicle was stolen, however it was repossessed.
8:45 a.m. A Hernandez caller said a man was in his yard and didn’t know where he was at.
10:16 a.m. An officer stopped a vehicle near Fairview Elementary because of illegal dumping.
12:24 p.m. A Calle Gallegos caller said she was going into her house when a woman attacked her, physically hit and pulled her hair.
12:55 p.m. A caller reported paper or plastic packaging is wrapped around a powerline and transformer on Middle San Pedro Road.
1:19 p.m. A man was slumped over the wheel of a vehicle by the main entrance at the Santa Claran Casino Hotel.
2:15 p.m. Two people were jaywalking near Thorton Lane and North Riverside Drive.
2:34 p.m. A Goodwill caller said they received four boxes of bullets as a donation.
2:44 p.m. An Enterprise product caller reported a well house was damaged and solar panels were stolen.
2:45 p.m. A Tierra Amarilla caller reported a truck that was hauling insulation did not have a secure load and the insulation was falling off the vehicle.
3:46 p.m. A woman’s death was reported in Alcalde.
4:39 p.m. A City Hall caller requested an officer in the voting area because there was an issue with voter disenfranchisement.
6 p.m. A Calle Adrian caller reported someone in a white truck was firing warning shots.
6:26 p.m. A Hernandez caller said his stepdaughter is having an episode outside, jumped in the bed of the truck and is yelling profanities.
6:56 p.m. A woman who had two children with her was shoplifting from Walmart.
8:17 p.m. A Mountain View Street caller said a woman asked her to call the police because she’s afraid and hiding from a drunk man.
8:39 p.m. An El Guique caller reported his girlfriend hit him in the face. The girlfriend then called and said her boyfriend hit her. When police arrived, they both said nothing happened and they were just arguing.
9:50 p.m. An Apple Valley Apartments caller said a woman is yelling that she is going to kill someone.
Drunk or High?
Feb. 13
7:31 a.m. A Costilla Lane caller reported someone is sleeping in a dump truck at the beginning of the road.
8:18 a.m. A Speedway caller said a man at pump number six was slumped over in a car.
10:12 a.m. A Chimayó caller reported the irrigation pipes appeared to be intentionally damaged.
10:20 a.m. A Velarde caller said several irrigation bonnets were stolen from their property. They said three were taken and they’re worth $300 each.
11:59 a.m. A Habitat for Humanity caller reported someone was behind the store last night. They said people have started fires back there before and the homeless are defecating behind the building.
12:54 p.m. A Santa Cruz Post Office caller said a girl is parked there and she’s either on drugs or drunk.
2:10 p.m. A caller reported hitting a gas line on North Riverside Drive and it’s leaking.
2:27 p.m. A caller from The Establishment Barbershop said his employees got back to the building and found a backpack. They’re not sure what’s in it.
6:34 p.m. A Lindrith caller reported a student spoke with a coach and told him that his friend said his father pulled a gun on him at their house.
9:07 p.m. A Calle Senaida caller said a woman in a robe is knocking on doors and ringing doorbells.
9:18 p.m. A Calle Valdez caller reported a man wearing a pink jacket is outside, slamming the door and waving a knife around.
10:29 p.m. An overdose was reported in Chamita. Two doses of Narcan were administered.
Fake Landlord
Feb. 14
12:20 a.m. A Chimayó caller said he had someone go to a smoke shop and get him something. He drank whatever was brought to him and doesn’t feel right.
12:31 a.m. An overdose was reported in Chimayó. The man who phoned earlier called again and said he was overdosing on fentanyl and thought someone did it to him.
8:52 a.m. A Dixon caller said a man with a weapon is knocking on people’s doors and has been doing so all night.
9:54 a.m. A Lyden caller reported her rare book collection was taken from her house.
12:10 p.m. A Hernandez caller said the neighbors have a sewer line going from their house to his property and it’s draining onto his land.
12:55 p.m. An officer stopped a jaywalker near Allsups.
1:49 p.m. A Dairy Queen caller reported a man was nodding out in the lobby.
2:22 p.m. A La Mesilla caller said the neighbor got onto his 4-wheeler and was driving recklessly, throwing dirt and giving him dirty looks.
2:50 p.m. A caller reported a strong propane smell near FerrellGas.
3:06 p.m. A Fairview Lane caller said she called several times about a homeless camp in the area and now there are two people in the area.
3:12 p.m. A County Road 2 caller reported seeing squatters at an abandoned house. A woman was taking bags of food into the house on which the roof is caving in.
3:23 p.m. A Calle Adrian caller thinks her landlord is a con artist and is only pretending to own the property she lives on.
4:26 p.m. An Avenida Cañada caller said the State Police had a warrant to search his house and broke his windows and cameras.
4:30 p.m. A Hernandez caller reported a man and woman were trespassing. The man was drinking and got combative with the caller when he told him he was trespassing.
4:37 p.m. A caller saw a vehicle go off the road and into a ditch on Los Alamos Highway.
4:45 p.m. A Champion Car was caller said a woman in a black sedan began cursing at her and told her to move.
5:16 p.m. A Valley Drive caller reported a woman stole packages from their driveway.
5:58 p.m. A Subway caller said a man’s been in the bathroom for two hours and won’t answer the door.
7:22 p.m. An Apple Valley Apartments caller requested a welfare check on a woman who’s outside her apartment, yelling.
8:48 p.m. A Kentucky Fried Chicken manager said a woman stole money from her and she has video to prove it.
9:20 p.m. A caller reported a cow was next to the college off Paseo de Oñate.
10:51 p.m. A Calle Redonda caller said a man was conscious and breathing but had a cut on his head.
Being Disabled Isn’t an Excuse
Feb. 15
4:31 a.m. A Kennedy Loop caller heard multiple gunshots and a man making war calls.
4:59 a.m. A caller said they received information that a 21-year-old man was with their 12-year-old daughter.
10:37 a.m. A man went into the Family Dollar in Chimayó and started going off on the employee.
12:17 p.m. A Burger King caller said an employee was being threatened by another employee. He was threatening to kill her and cut her head off.
1:29 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a woman who was lying in the middle of the highway going toward Taos.
1:35 p.m. A Chimayó caller reported a car tried to run over them and their dog on purpose.
4:46 p.m. A Dixon Co-op caller said a man hit his car in the parking lot twice with his door and refused to exchange information with him. The man then pulled out a handicapped placard and said he was disabled.
5:07 p.m. A person went to EPD to report a stolen credit card and file a report.
5:39 p.m. A Bubble Zone caller said a customer is irate and harassing them.
10:09 p.m. An El Rito caller reported a very large fire in a field next to her house.
Causing a Commotion
Feb. 16
12:24 a.m. A Medanales caller said a mental patient has a knife and is stabbing a wig in the closet because he thinks it’s a real person.
12:51 a.m. A brown bull was in the parking lot at Spruce Street and North Coronado Avenue.
7:56 a.m. A Calle del Sol caller said a man and a pregnant woman are arguing and the man said he’s going to shoot whomever goes to the house.
9:12 a.m. An Alcalde caller reported his garage was broken into and camping equipment was taken.
9:23 a.m. A Calle Adrian caller said a man claiming to be the landlord is at her house. She said she was going to go out and throw rocks.
10:53 a.m. A Vista de Corral caller reported a man with a gun was on their property and was yelling and cussing.
11:30 a.m. A Calle Lopez caller said squatters were in a condemned house.
11:40 a.m. An overdose was reported in Medanales.
12:30 p.m. A Center Market caller reported a man is in the store yelling and causing a commotion.
12:51 p.m. A Chimayó caller said a man is inside a mobile home that burned down and is taking things.
3 p.m. A vehicle collision was reported in Ohkay Owingeh.
3:40 p.m. A student was reportedly showing off a handgun at Española Valley High School.
5:21 p.m. A caller said a man was running around near Pizza Hut without a shirt and was being chased by a woman.
5:23 p.m. A caller reported a couple of men were trying to take the handlebars off a bicycle at Hamm Parkway and Lower San Pedro Road.
6:37 p.m. A Family Dollar in Abiquiú caller said people at the store were refusing to help her out and they took $20 from her.
9:15 p.m. A Chamita caller reported his nephew may or may not have a weapon and is frightening his nieces.
Runaway Trampoline
Feb. 17
1:07 a.m. A caller said she’s being admitted into Darren’s Place in the morning but is lost and wants directions.
5:22 a.m. A Vallecitos caller reported a house is on fire and fully engulfed.
10:25 a.m. A Lowe’s Home Improvement caller said someone in a truck stole metal rack displays valued at $250 each.
10:56 a.m. A Calle Las Tunas caller reported the neighbor started yelling at her and threatened to beat her up over dog issues.
10:59 a.m. A Romero’s Fruit Stand caller said there are poly carts all over the road from their business up to Jemez Mountains Electric Cooperative.
11:17 a.m. A Zia Barbershop caller reported his wife was sitting in the vehicle when someone ran up and broke the window, then ran away.
1:57 p.m. A DMV caller said the person in the vehicle next to hers opened the door and the wind flung it open and dented her door.
1:59 p.m. A Dixon caller reported her big trampoline is flying into the power lines and she can’t get it.
4:15 p.m. An F&A Zip Car wash caller said someone broke into the storage units this morning.
5:28 p.m. A Camino de Paz caller reported a man made a death threat toward their son and contacted him via Snapchat.
6:03 p.m. A caller said a guy walked out of Del Taco and the back door was left open.
6:22 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on people in a vehicle that hasn’t moved in 20 minutes. The caller said the people have foil in their hands.
7:17 p.m. A woman went to the lobby of the Rio Arriba County Detention Center, saying she was poisoned.
11:04 p.m. A brown cow was in the road near Northern New Mexico College.
