(SUNfoto by Wren Abbott) Velarde Fire Chief Eddie Velarde leans on the car Andrea Valdez, 27, of Velarde, crashed into a tree behind Velarde Elementary Nov. 23 after rolling it at least once, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s Lt. Manuel Valdez said. She was unconscious when paramedics arrived and was treated at Española Hospital for unknown injuries. Manuel Valdez said there was no evidence that alcohol was involved in the crash. He cited excessive speed as a possible contributing factor. The investigation into speeding was ongoing as of Tuesday, and no citations had been issued, he said.
