Police Blotter: Using Hand Sanitizer to Burn Weeds, Fellow Student

The police blotter is published to give readers an abridged look at criminal activity in their community and neighborhood. It is simply an illustration of what local law enforcement, funded by taxpayers, must deal with daily throughout the Española Valley.

Española Police officers, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies or State Police responded to the following calls:

Alcohol Diet

April 16

8:21 a.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a skinny girl in pajamas who was walking near the Ohkay Casino.

9:15 a.m. A caller said his company trailer was stolen from a job site in Colorado and the tracker on it is showing that it’s at a house on Calle Gallegos. The responding officer wasn’t able to find it.

9:23 a.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man sitting on the side of the road in Medanales. The responding officer said the man was mentally challenged and his parents were going to pick him up.

10:42 a.m. A Calle del Rancho caller reported the neighbors are throwing trash and tires in the cul de sac.

12:12 p.m. An El Centro Family Health caller said an employee has been stealing money from other employees and was caught on camera.

12:46 p.m. An unhoused woman with a towel on her head was refusing to leave City Hall.

1:18 p.m. A Velarde caller reported someone wrecked into the wall.

1:58 p.m. A State Road 76 woman wanted a man taken to the hospital because he hasn’t eaten for two month and has only been drinking alcohol.

2:51 p.m. An El Llano Road caller said her nephew physically hit her and threw her on the floor. He also tried to hit her with a hacksaw but missed.

2:51 p.m. A Rio Grand Styles caller reported someone hit her vehicle while she was working.

3:52 pm. A caller said a student threw a desk at her grandson at the Española Middle School and she wasn’t notified about it.

5:15 p.m. A Santa Cruz Country Store caller reported a man pulled a gun and pointed it at them.

5:20 p.m. A State Road 76 caller said a van smashed into another vehicle and then into them. Both vehicles fled.

5:24 p.m. A Fairview Sonic caller reported a car was hugging the shoulder and the driver was driving like he “doesn’t know where he is.”

7:53 p.m. A Circle C caller said someone in a vehicle threw something at her car and is following her, revving the engine and trying to ram her. She went to the State Police parking lot and the person drove off.

8 p.m. A Sage Street caller requested courtesy rounds because a child is walking up and down the road, picking up rocks and throwing them at dogs and taunting them.

9:55 p.m. A Walgreens caller said people keep going in and out of the store and are trying to start things with employees.

Burritos or Tools?

April 17

8:42 a.m. A caller reported a man is parked with a trailer near Lowe’s Home Improvement and selling either tools or burritos. They want an officer to check and see if he has a permit to sell on the property.

8:58 a.m. A Fairview Lane caller said Narcan was used on a woman.

11:41 a.m. A person went to the Española Police Department and wanted to speak with an officer about ongoing employee sexual harassment at City Hall.

3:39 p.m. An Alcalde Elementary caller wanted to file a report because a student tried to start weeds on fire with hand sanitizer and the same day, tried to start another student’s hand on fire with hand sanitizer.

5:37 p.m. A Santa Cruz Country Store caller said a woman in a car pulled a knife and was trying to fight her.

7:52 p.m. A caller reported a man dressed in all black and wearing a ski mask was walking around Calle Gallegos and they wanted courtesy rounds.

11:54 p.m. A Goodwill caller said four people were fighting in the parking lot.

Hot Ice Cream

April 18

1:19 a.m. An Indian Way caller reported her ex-boyfriend went to her house and slashed her tires.

1:24 a.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man near Speedway who jumped in front of her vehicle. When she asked if he was OK< he started yelling and wasn’t making sense.

1:30 a.m. An officer was involved in a pursuit on El Llano Road and North McCurdy Road.

5:06 a.m. An overdose was reported on Calle del Sol. Three doses of Narcan were administered.

11:05 a.m. An Abiquiú caller said a rally was going on at the old Las Clinicas del Norte parking lot and he wanted the owners of eight vehicles on the property to prove they had liability insurance or he’d have the vehicles removed.

1:44 p.m. A Dollar General in Española employee followed a shoplifter who took ice cream. The man allegedly threatened to shoot her and threw a rock at her while she was chasing him. The woman was upset because officers took 45 minutes to respond, she said they were useless. The officer advised her of the dangers of chasing people for taking ice cream. She yelled at him and slammed the door in his face and told him to leave.

2:18 p.m. A Chimayó caller said his sister threatened to burn down his house. He said she already almost burned it down once before.

5:30 p.m. A Red Hawk Court caller reported his girlfriend hit him with her phone.

5:48 p.m. A Prairie Dog caller said their ATV started on fire.

7:41 p.m. A caller reported a man was going through the mailboxes toward the end of Middle San Pedro Road.

11:21 p.m. A Villa del Norte Apartments caller said someone is in her yard and it looks like they’re digging for something.

No Free Food

April 19

12:29 a.m. A North Coronado Avenue caller reported someone was on the back porch, messing with his back door.

12:54 a.m. An Española Hospital caller said someone shot at her car and hit her baby.

1:19 a.m. An overdose was reported at Treasures of Enchantment. Two doses of Narcan were administered.

7:09 a.m. A woman’s death was reported on Fairview Lane.

11:55 a.m. A Little Caesar’s caller said a homeless person was demanding a free pizza.

12:19 p.m. An Agua Sana Water Association caller reported a fence and gate was broken and someone stole multiple pipes and maybe other items.

1:35 p.m. A Po Pay Avenue caller said a man hit her in the face and back.

3:34 p.m. A Walmart caller reported a man was verbally abusing all the employees and security.

4:49 p.m. A rolling domestic was reported in Hernandez.

4:57 p.m. A Roadrunner Drive caller said a person was trying to stab them with a screwdriver.

5:28 p.m. A Calle de Pajarito caller reported a woman who was staying with him stole his wallet and took photos of his Social Security number and was threatening to post pictures of her personal information.

6:15 p.m. A Walgreens caller said two women in an SUV were harassing an employee and it happens often.

6:26 p.m. An overdose was reported on East Laguna Street.

8:27 p.m. A Chili’s caller said a man in a mask was sitting in his car and then went into the restaurant.

April 20

8:04 a.m. A La Joya Street caller reported homeless people broke into the storage units and are sleeping in them.

8:22 a.m. An Abiquiú caller said furniture was taken from her front yard and her Ring camera caught the theft.

11:01 a.m. A caller reported hearing a pop and the boat they’re in started smoking and taking on water.

11:36 a.m. A woman who appeared battered was trying to flag people down by Hernandez Elementary.

2:06 p.m. A woman said her cousin pulled her arm and dislocated her shoulder yesterday.

2:21 p.m. A Debbie Reynold’s Insurance caller reported a man is dancing in the parking lot and his pants keep falling down and he’s exposing himself.

2:31 p.m. A San Pedro Shell caller said a man across from the station keeps pulling down his pants and exposing himself.

5:08 p.m. An Alcalde caller reported that his neighbor threatened to shoot him even though he very nicely asked them to move the stuff they built on his property.

5:48 p.m. A caller said a truck went by and people in side it shot four rounds at a house on Fairview Lane.

9:56 p.m. A Calle Vigil caller reported her brother-in-law is there, threatening to shoot everyone.

11:23 p.m. A Hernandez caller said a woman threatened to stab her.

Packing the Essentials

April 21

12:55 a.m. A caller reported two men were flashing flashlights in the San Pedro Shell and pacing around.

1:28 a.m. A North Monterey Lane caller said a drunk man went to their house.

7:20 a.m. A Calle Chavez caller reported hearing a bang around 3 a.m. and discovered his vehicle had a bullet hole in it and his house also had bullet holes.

9:25 a.m. A Lowe’s Home Improvement caller said a man assaulted a cleaning lady by hitting her and pushing her.

10:24 a.m. A caller reported a man walking on Fairview Lane was throwing things at passing vehicles.

12:27 p.m. An Ohkay Bupingeh caller said her boyfriend is hitting her and also hit a child in the head.

1:03 p.m. A North Calle Senaida caller reported a man’s daughter against whom he has a restraining order, is giving him alcohol in exchange for a place to stay. They said there’s prostitution and drug use, too.

1:32 p.m. An Ash Loop caller found a suitcase filled with women’s lingerie.

2:08 p.m. An Alcalde caller said the neighbor is harassing them about water in the ditch. The neighbor took a pole off the caller’s fence and threw it in their yard.

2:55 p.m. A trailer stolen from Colorado was pinging at a property on Taos Lane.

3:22 p.m. A La Joya Street caller said a wallet and driver’s license was found in their yard and they want to turn it over to the police.

4:17 p.m. A man who was unable to walk was dropped off at the Santa Cruz Country Store by a Pojoaque Police officer. He then tried to get on a school bus and asked the driver for a ride.

5:09 p.m. A Family Dollar in Hernandez caller said a man on a bicycle was throwing rocks at passing vehicles.

8:18 p.m. A Hernandez caller reported the neighbors are firing gunshots. A second caller said she heard people arguing and more shots fired. A man called and said “help me, people are shooting at me.”

April 22

7:06 a.m. A Walmart caller said a drunk man with a knife was talking to himself in the electronics area and they wanted him removed.

7:42 a.m. A Dandy Burger caller reported a man is harassing an elderly lady and asking her for money.

8:06 a.m. A caller said her 12-year-old son is being bullied at Fairview Elementary and yesterday it became physical and he was hit by another student.

8:26 a.m. A Rivera mortuary caller reported his wallet was stolen while he was at work. He removed money from his account but someone is trying to use his card.

9:07 a.m. A man’s vehicle was broken into at Windstream on East Paseo de Oñate and copper wire was also taken.

10:30 a.m. A Ziegler Insurance caller said a woman keeps returning and said she was going to have an organization or a gang beat the caller.

12:48 p.m. A North Riverside Drive caller reported a man was punching a woman in the face.

1:02 p.m. A fire was reported in Chamita.

4:33 p.m. A Coyote Senior Center caller reported gasoline was stolen from a vehicle sometime overnight.

5:07 p.m. A Sacred Heart Church caller said a man in a wheelchair was asking for a ride and was leaving a trail of blood because he was bleeding from his foot.

5:32 p.m. A Walgreens caller reported a man went into the store asking for Narcan.

7:08 p.m. A caller wanted to report an inappropriate relationship happening after hours between a 17-year-old intern and a male employee at the city Planning and Land Use office.

7:52 p.m. A caller said a van was driving up and down Simmons Lane and juveniles were hanging onto the hood and another was hanging onto the back of the van.

11:16 p.m. A driver was pulled over and arrested for DWI in Chamita.
