The Sundevil senior finished second at the state wrestling tournament in 114 pounds for the second-straight year. He collected his big win in the semifinal, defeating the top seed and avenging his loss from last year’s final. In the championship match, he battled all the way into overtime before just missing and going down two points.
Cruz Sandoval, Española Valley Wrestling
Española’s 139-pound wrestler finished second at state again, coming just shy of capturing a state title. After big wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals, Sandoval entered the championship looking for a victory. He came up just short when a controversial penalty call awarded the match’s only point to his opponent with just 13 seconds remaining in the final period.
