Greysen Horan, Escalante Boys Basketball
Horan’s pair of double-doubles led to a pair of big comeback wins over Mora and McCurdy, and leading Escalante into a district tiebreak game. Horan scored 14 points with 14 rebounds against McCurdy, and had 16 and 10 against Mora, with seven blocks between the two games.
Noah Maez, Española Valley Wrestling
Maez finished his wrestling career with a strong third-place finish at the state tournament. Despite entering the tournament as the sixth seed, he defeated the No. 3 seed twice, in both the quarterfinal and the third-place match. His lone loss came to the state runner-up in a narrow 3-0 loss. The final win was a thriller, where Maez scored the winning point on an escape with seven seconds left.
Irvin Primero, Española Valley Boys Basketball
The shorter but physical sophomore center led the Sundevils to a massive win over Taos to force a district tiebreak game. He scored eight points out of the gates and finished with 16. In the second half, when not adding on to his point total, his rebounding and defense calmed down on Taos.
Brittni Suazo, Mesa Vista Girls Basketball
Suazo’s big game led the Lady Trojans to a big win over Peñasco to clinch the district championship and finish a 10-0 run. Against Peñasco, the senior scored eight points, all in the second half, and grabbed nine rebounds while playing big defense.
