Coronado Tournament
The Coronado Leopards (2-1) won first place at their home tournament, the First Annual Leopard Invitational in Gallina.
Coronado defeated Tierra Encantada (0-2) 51-40, and then beat Tse’ Yi’ Gai (1-3) 49-40 in the championship. Tse’ Yi’ Gai had beaten Shiprock Northwest (0-4) in the tournamnet’s first round.
Coronado’s Mossi Gutierrez (see: Athlete of the Week), Zack Aragon and Micheal Suskey all scored double figures for the Leopards.
The Lady Leopards (1-2) finished second in the weekend tournament.
They won their first game 59-6 over Tierra Encantada (0-2). In the tournament championship, they lost to Tse’ Yi’ Gai (2-0).
Pojoaque Elks
The Pojoaque Elks (4-2) took on the Al Armendariz Tournament at Santa Fe’s Capital High School, and secured a strong third-place finish.
In the first round, the Elks defeated Kirtland Central (1-3) with a strong first half. The next day, they lost in a semifinal to Farmington (3-0) who went on to crush Capital in the tournament champion.
In the third-place game, Pojoaque defeated Pecos (3-2) 63-55.
Dalian Lopez played well for the Elks throughout the weekend.
Peñasco’s girls team also played at the tournamnet, and finished fifth, losing in the first round to Navajo Prep then winning over Capital and Pecos.
