Local small schools competed on March 30 at the Cimarron Memorial Invitational.
For the girls, Escalante finished fourth, McCurdy was seventh, Peñasco 11th and Mesa Vista 13th. In the boys competition, Escalante finished sixth, Peñasco seventh, Mesa Vista ninth and McCurdy in 11th.
Leading the way for Escalante was Ashley Gilmore, who finished first in the 100-meter hurdles, second in the 300-meter hurdles, and was part of 4×100 and 4×400 teams that both finished third. Hannah Lopez finished second in both the 100 and 400-meter races and in the 100-meter hurdles. Felice Baca placed second in the 200-meter dash.
For Escalante’s boys, Ramon Martinez placed second in the discus. Damon Emery was third in both the javelin and shot put. And Jayden Salazar finished tied for second in the 100-meter dash and second in the 200.
For Mesa Vista, they finished 1-2 in the boys 3200-meter run with Ezequiel Nevarez and Jonathan Martinez. And Kenneth Gallegos was third in the 800 meters.
Mesa Vista also had Camryn Johnson place third in the girls shot put. Estrella Alire placed third in the girls 3200 meters.
The McCurdy girls relay team of Aubrey Cordova, Avery Knight, Kaylee Martinez and Marisol Serna took first place in the 4×800-meter relay. Their time of 11:50.64 currently ranks best in 2A.
The same group placed fourth in the sprint medley. Serna also won the girls 3200-meter race. Knight was fourth in the 1600.
Their boys team placed fourth in the 4×100-meter relay, and Cruz Martinez was the top individual performer, placing fifth in the shot put.
Peñasco’s Jude Martinez finished second in the boys 1600 meters and anchored a 4×800-relay team that finished third. Kaileb Atencio was third in the 200 meters. And Charnelle Gonzales placed second in the 1600 meters, and was part of a 4×800 team that placed third.
