Senior Center Reopens

Published:

The Beatrice Martinez Senior Center has reopened after being closed for almost two weeks due to a gas leak discovered by the New Mexico Gas Company.

“The cause of the leak was a corroded exterior line buried underground,” Española City Manager Michael Ortiz wrote in an email.

The leak was detected on May 6 by a N.M. Gas Co. truck that detects leaks through the air.

The city closed the center on May 7 and all interior work was completed by May 18, Ortiz wrote. It reopened to the public on May 19.

No one was injured as a result of the gas leak.

The cost of repairs is unknown because the city has yet to receive the invoice from the vendor, Ortiz wrote in a May 20 email.

“Thank you to all involved in getting these repairs completed as quickly as possible,” he wrote.
