State Police are offering a no-questions-asked approach to help people dispose of prescription drugs.
Police will be at the Dollar Store parking lot in Peñasco and at the State Police barracks in Taos Saturday (9/25) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to accept unused or expired prescription drugs for disposal, according to an announcement.
Sgt. Chris Valdez said the point of the collection is to keep the drugs from ending up on the street.
For people who can’t make the trip, Valdez provided a flyer that states people can dispose of their own medication by removing personal information from the containers and placing the medication containers in a separate container with a lid or a plastic baggie. Unused drugs can be mixed with used coffee grounds, kitty litter or spoiled food in a sealed plastic bag or separate container and disposed in the trash. Valdez said medication can leach into the water supply if it is simply thrown out or flushed.
