Sundevils ‘Ride the Rocket’ to Bring Home the Blue

(SUNfoto by George Morse) Tears fill the eyes of Española Valley High School point guard Rodney Coles as he hugs a teammate after the Sundevils defeated Roswell Goddard 55-52 in the Class AAAA boys state basketball championship game March 12 at The Pit in Albuquerque. Coles lost his father, also named Rodney, Oct. 23, 2010, just before basketball season began. He sank the winning basket against Capital High School in the quarterfinals of the state tournament, scored 29 points in the Sundevils’ semifinal win over St. Pius X and had 14 points in the fourth quarter against Goddard in the championship.
