When I moved to Española last year I wanted to find a way to meet people and be part of the community. When I joined the volunteer army of “kitchen angels” at St. Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen I discovered how many good people live here.
While the problem of hunger is serious, the atmosphere in the kitchen is not. There is plenty of joking and chatter as pots are stirred, sandwiches are assembled or cookies bagged. For myself and others, volunteering is our happy hour(s).
Nearly every day of the year, the Soup Kitchen provides a healthy and delicious meal to 50-70 people (more at month’s end). Located in a neighborhood of subsidized housing, lunches are also delivered to grateful individuals who are disabled.
When I have the privilege of bringing lunches to these people I wonder how they would eat without the help of St. Martin.
As you can imagine, it costs money to run the Soup Kitchen. There is no overpaid CEO or luxurious facility sucking up money- just many caring people working together in a simple building.
This is your opportunity to join the effort to feed people. The annual fundraiser runs January through March. There will be a virtual costume contest and the drawing for the raffle is April 2.
Please buy as many raffle tickets as you can.
Cash and other prizes will be given but the big winners are the hungry. Contact Suzie Roybal at 505-753-4956 or email smdpsoupkitchen@yahoo.com or visit website Mission: Feed the Poor & Hungry
