Train Would Bring Tourists;Maintain Culture, History

    I propose the city of Española be the caretaker of one of the train engines sitting in Chama. There are at least two engines that do not operational (492 and 483) on the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad system. These two engines are the same type used on the Chili Line that rant through Española until 1941. The 473 stationed in Durango, Colo., which runs to Silverton actually ran on the Chili Line.

    The city of Española could be the caretaker of one of these engines, a coal car, a pullman and caboose. The engine doesn’t have to be operational as we do not have a track upon which to run it. It would, however, enrich the history and culture of the city and bring pride, history and tourism to the west side of town. The city could also promote the Cubmres and Toltec Railroad by suggesting riding the real thing from Chama.

    Since the railroad is owned by both New Mexico and Colorado, the governor of New Mexico would be an asset to help us care for one of these engines.

    The city could have a dining car and a museum shop set up in this car that could sell items that represent the railroad station we had in Española. The city would set a fee for anyone $1) to get into the engine compartment and ring the bell on the train. This would help offset the cost of maintaining the train for minor repairs such as paint.

    If the train needs repairs before being displayed at the Convento sight, the college may actually be able to help as it has an automotive shop, a plumbing shop and a machine shop that is operated by the lab in Los Alamos.

    The Spanish Heritage foundation could help as well as the National Park Service to get funding for this adventure.

    In the long run, wouldn’t it be great if we could have a rail system around the Valley as a form of transportation for commuters from around Española to the Convento. We could have it run every day by the hour. This is just a thought, but a wonderful dream
