This cinnamon male bear decided to make its way through Española and near the McCurdy Road and Godfrey Lane intersection before being seen by residents in the neighborhood. After a call was placed to 911 by residents, the bear, reacting to neighborhood dogs barking, climbed up a tree behind a trailer on Paseo Melendez, according to nearby resident Deborah Begel. Christian Marrujo, an Espånola district officer of New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, shot the bear in the backside with a tranquilizer gun, About 10 minutes later, the bear slowly began to fall down the tree before falling on a shed below, but didn’t sustain any injuries, according to Marrujo. The bear was eventually tagged and transported off the property. Marrujo said he released the bear back into the wild later that day. The bear is back in the Santa Fe National Forest in the vicinity of the Jemez Mountains.
