20 Pets Adopted at Española Event

Published:

Almost 20 pets found new homes May 9 during the Española Animal Shelter’s “Empty Shelter Event.”

Shelter spokeswoman Nina Chiotasso said 10 cats and nine dogs were adopted at the event.

“Several of them were long-time residents,” Chiotasso said. “One was a dog name Gracie. She had come to us five weeks ago with a litter of puppies. The puppies all came and went, so it was great to find Gracie a home also.”

The Empty Shelter Event was the third in a series of events organized over the past year to alleviate overcrowding at the shelter, Chiotasso said. During the events, the shelter offers pets at a discounted adoption fee. A total of 166 animals have been adopted over the three events, Chiotasso said.

The shelter currently houses about 120 cats and dogs, Chiotasso said.

The shelter’s next adoption event will be the Kitten Fest to be held July 24 and 25 at the Santa Fe Petco. Cats and kittens will be available for adoption at a $35 fee, Chiotasso said. Adoption fees are usually $80 for kittens and puppies and $40 for adult cats and dogs.

All pets are spayed/neutered, vaccinated and dewormed prior to adoption. The shelter is located on Hamm Parkway in Española. For more information, call 753-8662.
