Española firefighter Cesar Vargas has been placed on paid administrative leave after he was arrested by Española Police, according to the Española Fire Department.

Vargas was charged with negligent use of a deadly weapon and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer after an incident that occurred at his Española home, according to court documents.

Kitchen said Vargas was put on paid administrative leave Nov. 4, but not because of the arrest. Vargas has a medical condition he needs treatment for and can’t work until he gets treatment from a doctor, Kitchen said.

The misdemeanor charges do not affect Vargas’ employment, Kitchen sad.

“They occurred when he was off duty,” Kitchen said. “As long as it doesn’t violate any policies or procedures, which it doesn’t, it’s a private matter.”
