Española NurseOne of the Good Guys (Gals)

Brenda Romero has been a shining example of a loyal employee with great work ethic, dedication and the drive to go far beyond what her job description asks. Romero is the director of nursing services at the Española Hospital.

If you watch Grey’s Anatomy or Scrubs, doctors are heroes, Gods, immortal deities who may occasionally stumble, make a mistake, but learn from it and become better heroes, with brighter capes and sturdier armor. If you’ve ever had a loved one in the hospital, you know nurses do all the heavy lifting. Nurses know what is going on with each patient, their medications, any complications and can almost predict what the doctor will say before he or she decides to bless you with his or her presence for a sacred three minutes before running off to who knows where.

Who’s left behind? The nurses. And among nurses Romero stands far above the rest. She was recognized Oct. 25 by the New Mexico Organization of Nurse Executives at a banquet in Bernalillo. She’s the first nurse from this hospital to be so recognized by the organization.

It wasn’t just the work side of her life that earned her the distinction. She also does volunteer work to address drug abuse and domestic violence in the Valley. Behind education, those are the two key issues holding back sustainable growth in our area.

She lives here and works here, a rare combination in a community that empties every morning and repopulates in the evening. That means she’s in touch with what is going on in her community.

Romero is a board member of the Lunch Buddy Program, on two college nursing department advisory boards and served on the governor’s Drug Prevention Task Force. If you’d like to meet someone walking the walk, Romero’s is the correct hand to shake.

Congratulations and thank you, Brenda Romero. You’re truly one of the stand-out citizens in our Valley and we’re fortunate to benefit from your knowledge, experience, morals, ethics and drive.
