Trojans Trounce District Rival; Extend Win Streak to 13 Games

The Mesa Vista Trojans’ home victory Feb. 14 over McCurdy Bobcats extended their winning streak to 13 games.

The Mesa Vista Trojans handily beat the McCurdy Bobcats 74-52 as the Bobcats continued their season-long offensive struggles.

At the end of the first quarter, the Bobcats were trailing by three points, 16-13, but couldn’t match the Trojans offense thereafter.

Mesa Vista point guard Frankie Giron started the second quarter with two-three pointers followed by Trojan power forward Jamie Cruz, who scored four quick points before McCurdy coach Fil Dominguez called time out.

“I missed the last game when we played McCurdy, and I really wanted to do my best,” Cruz said after putting up 17 points in the game.

The Trojans’ strong second quarter put them up by 17 points at halftime.

“We have been working hard all week for this game and we definitely need a win tonight,” Dominguez said.

By the end of the third quarter, the Bobcats were down by 23 points. Six Trojans contributed to a 19-point quarter.

In the middle of the fourth quarter, Mesa Vista coach Thomas Vigil went to his bench. Mesa Vista’s Greg Trujillo scored 12 points during his four minutes of playing time.

“We play as a team and we win as a team,” Trujillo said. “It felt good to score for the team and step-up on my part, and maybe earn a little more playing time.”

McCurdy fell to 0-4 in District 3AA, while Mesa Vista solidified its hold on first place at 4-0.

Despite getting poked in the eye during the first quarter, Giron scored 13 points.

“My vision was kind of blurry, but coach told me to shoot with confidence and keep shooting.” Giron said. “This is my last season and I wanted to win for the team and play my hardest.”

Bobcat Bobby Garcia scored 23 points in a losing effort. “

I might be biased, but Bobby is the best big guy in the District,” Dominguez said. “We got the ball to him, but it wasn’t enough. It’s a tough loss, but it’s a testament to how good Mesa Vista is.”
