Leigh Rubin, the creator of the globally syndicated Rubes cartoon, will speak Friday from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m. at Española Valley High School.
The event is free and open to the public, courtesy of the SUN.
Rubin began his artistic career in 1978, after he was struck by inspiration while walking through the card section of a pharmacy. He created a publishing company to distribute his own greeting cards, and by 1984 Rubes had begun appearing in newspapers. It is now distributed to more than 400 newspapers worldwide, including the SUN.

A 60-year-old Hernandez man committed suicide by shooting himself in the chest Monday night, according to State Police.
Johnny Roybal’s body was found by his brother James in a camper on his Hernandez property, State Police Capt. Daniel Lovato said. A .38 caliber revolver and a suicide note were found near his body, Lovato said. State Police criminal agents determined there were no signs of foul play surrounding the death, Lovato said.
Roybal’s family did not return a call for comment.
