Eight-month-old Camila Madrid, of Española, squirms during a hearing test April 17 at Las Cumbres Community Services. Occupational therapist Andrea Montaño (left), of the New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, teamed up with New Mexico School for the Deaf’s Kristi Readyhough (right) to assess children ages 3 and under for potential developmental delays. In other portions of the clinic, children were weighed and measured and tested for age-appropriate social and emotional development.

Las Cumbres hosts regular children’s health fairs to bring families in contact with a range of child-serving agencies. Las Cumbres developmental specialist Inez Ingle said the fairs also promote early intervention, since it’s better to identify potential problems before children enroll in school.
